Safety Tips for Yard, Basement and Garage

Whether we are a resident or seasonal cottage, working on the lakefront lot, in the basement or garage is sometimes necessary and often enjoyable. But, working in these areas require extra safety precautions. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe.

  • Keep an adequately stocked first aid kit handy
  • Always carry a fully charged cellular phone
  • If you have a garage, install a land-line phone
  • Install functioning fire extinguishers (to match the fire potential) in you home, cottage, garage and basement
  • Keep hazardous materials stored out of reach of children and pets
  • Store gasoline in a locked outdoor shed
  • Wear safety glasses, ear protection and safety gloves to match the job at hand
  • Wear tight fitting clothing and remove all rings and other jewelry before beginning any task
  • Unplug power tools when not in use
  • Unplug power tools before changing attachments or trouble-shooting
  • Have a friend work with you when using a chain saw, and wear all the recommended protective equipment such as hard hat, safety gloves, goggles, ear protection, safety boots and safety pants
